Good Characteristics of M.M.P. Mentors

Be Available
Students will need to meet with you at a mutually convenient time. Generally, students will need your help in seeking resources or to learn about a particular program. Please respond to students as soon as possible.

Be Concrete
Be succinct, clear, concise, direct and relevant to what they are asking or saying. Try to be as helpful and informative as possible.

Be Dependable
When you are making appointments to meet with students follow through with the commitment. As a Mentor of the M.M.P, you are a student leader and ambassador for RFUMS. Postpone or cancel appointments rather than just NOT show up. BE RESPONSIBLE!

Be Empathetic
It is important to be able to sympathize and empathize with another individual’s situation wi9thout being judgmental. Try to understand the student’s feelings and effectively communicate your understanding. Make sure that in this process you are helping the student work toward solution. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or refer the student to someone else. You are not counselors. Just be a good listener.

Be Friendly
Smile! You MUST be responsive to students and that response should open with a smile. Show students that you care and are willing and able to help. Sometimes it is good to show that you have a sense of humor.

Be Genuine
Be “real” in your approach. communicate in an honest and truthful manner. Be honest and constructive with your answers. Help find a solution whenever you can. You may be expected to have all the answers to RFUMS. We know that none of us have ALL the answers but we need to know where to go to get them. If you do not know, be honest and tell them that you don’t know but you will find out as soon as possible and then do just that.

Be Respectful
It is important to let the students know that you value them and they are important to you. In order to gain respect, we must also give it. Show them that you respect them. Providing acceptance, warmth and being genuinely honest are just some of the characteristics that a M.M.P. Mentor should possess. Being nonjudgmental and positive are always very important.

ABOVE ALL, BE YOURSELF!
