Interprofessional Courses and Activities at Rosalind Franklin University The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Academics of Practice (NAP) stress the importance of interprofessional collaboration for delivery of health care. At Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, we take the initial steps toward achieving that goal by educating our students in an interprofessional environment. Our University mission is: “To serve the nation through the education of health and biomedical professionals and the discovery of knowledge dedicated to improving the health of its people” Stemming from that, one of the University Strategic Plan goals is to “Develop collaborative delivery of care models to facilitate curriculum integration.” This led to development of the Interprofessional Healthcare Teams courses. All incoming students participate in this experiential learning opportunity to interact in interprofessional healthcare teams focusing on patient centered care emphasizing evidence based practice, quality improvement strategies and informatics. Students are divided into interprofessional teams with a faculty or staff mentor for discussion sessions. The culminating activity is a service learning project. Interprofessionalism is not only promoted through classes and service projects and but also through student government, clubs, and social activities. Our student council, and our clubs are open to students from all programs. We encourage all of our students to be active in the student government and clubs and to participate in the various service opportunities and social activities while at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Even our buildings promote interprofessional interaction. Students from diverse health professional programs share one library, one student union, one computer laboratory, on campus housing and classrooms. We hope that Interprofessionalism will become more than just a concept for you; we hope that it will become a way of life. Through active interaction in your classes, social, and governmental activities we hope that you will come to know students from a variety of health professional programs and will strengthen your understanding and respect for the interprofessional collaborative healthcare team.
