The student budget is the Cost of Attendance (COA) for a year of enrollment in a particular program at the University. The COA represents the amount of financial aid a student can receive. Student budgets for full-time, on-campus students have 5 basic elements: Tuition, Fees, Health Insurance, Books and Supplies, and Personal. Tuition, Fees, and University-based Health Insurance are billed quarterly in the University Business Office to your student account. Financial Aid funds will also arrive and post in your student account quarterly. If you have requested funds to cover your living expenses, books, and/or outside health insurance you will receive a student payment (or “overpayment”) check every quarter from the Business Office. Student payment checks are made available to students after the beginning of every quarter. Tuition Tuition is billed quarterly in the University Business Office to your student account. Fees You will be billed quarterly for fees. Health Insurance This cost is allowed to cover your in-school health insurance (billed to your student account) or your outside insurance policy. The amount allowed includes dental and vision coverage. Call or visit the Business Office website for additional information regarding the school’s health insurance plan. If you elect not to participate in the school’s insurance plan, you will need to provide documentation of coverage to the Business Office. If you do not need funds to cover your health insurance, be sure to indicate this on your financial aid application. More information on the student health insurance. Books and Supplies This figure is based on surveys to your academic department. If you are requesting funding for books and supplies, the aid to cover these costs will be included in your quarterly overpayment check. Personal Funds can be used to cover rent, utilities, bills, groceries, and other necessities. Students are eligible for a maximum of $1700 per month for personal (or living) expenses. Students are expected to budget their funding appropriately. In certain circumstances, an exception to the standard student budget may be granted. These exceptions, called budget adjustments, must fall within the federal guidelines for student financial aid budgets. Examples of budget adjustments that may be approved include unexpected medical expenses and child care expenses. Please contact the financial aid office immediately if you are experiencing financial difficulties. We can offer budget counseling and may be able to approve a budget adjustment in some circumstances.
