Networking

Wireless Access

Wireless access points were recently installed in two classrooms on the first floor and two classrooms on the second floor of the Health Sciences Building. This will provide wireless network coverage in most of the classrooms on the north side of these two floors. Currently, these access points will be used to evaluate different data encryption methods and network login protocols. Therefore, to access the wireless network, you must enter an encryption key and then type in a username and password. These instructions explain the login process for the Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OSX operating systems.

Note: Make sure you have Service Pack 2 (SP2) and all Windows XP security patches installed before attempting to logon to the wireless network.

If you have any problems, please contact the Help Desk via email (helpdesk@rosalindfranklin.edu), or call x8800.

Students

Internet Service

The University provides access to high-speed internet/intranet service through the University’s network. This service is provided in all apartments to include access connections in all living rooms and bedrooms. This service is provided at no charge to resident students. Computer is not included. Students are encouraged to bring their own PC or laptop computer.

Each of the student apartments is wired for Network/Internet connectivity. Access to the Internet is provided primarily for academic research, but can also be used for legal personal use. As such, connection to the Internet is limited to the standard ports that are used for viewing web pages and downloading information.

Students wishing to access the campus network will find a blue network jack in the living room and the bedroom of each apartment. The network ports are disabled prior to your arrival. Students wishing to access the Internet from their apartments must first inform the IT Helpdesk. Only after a Helpdesk technician has verified that the system has the latest service packs, security updates and antivirus software installed will the network jack be enabled.

Any student apartment network connection that is found to be accessing the Internet in an unacceptable manner will be disabled. Contract action may be imposed as an outcome of further investigation or the port may be re-enabled.

Examples of unacceptable use of the network connection:

  • Downloading copyrighted content without the permission of the author.
  • Establishing peer-to-peer (P2P) connections for the purpose of sharing copyrighted material.
  • Establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to another Internet site.
  • Hosting a web site from the student apartments.

Faculty/Staff

Networking and Data Connectivity

Networking services are provided in offices, labs and most classrooms on campus.  These will support a minimum data transfer rate of 10mbit/s, most providing 100mbit/s, and some providing up to 1000mbit/s.

Telecommunications

Student Housing

Each apartment is equipped with telephone connections which operate all standard telephones. It is the responsibility of the student resident to provide their own telephones, and to make arrangement to secure a calling card to connect with off-campus and long distance numbers. On campus telephone service includes emergency on-campus telephone access, 911 service, voice-mail and all incoming calls.

Phone Lines are provided in-room, using the following jack colors:

  • White: Analog line for a standard telephone.
  • Yellow: Analog lines are provided for service modem support (i.e., satellite dish phone line).

The following additional jack is available:

  • Blue: University network connectivity (high-speed ethernet connection). There are blue network jacks located in both the bedrooms and living areas of the apartments.

Voicemail

Voicemail is provided by the University for most on-campus phones. The following documents the voicemail menu layout. Students need to dial x8700 to access voicemail.
