Verifying that your wireless network card is enabled:
Most laptop computers running Windows XP will have a small network icon in the system tray to indicate that your wireless interface is enabled. Your wireless network interface is enabled when you see the icon in the figure below. The red X over the icon indicates that the interface is enabled, but the computer is not connected to a wireless network.
In addition to enabling the wireless network interface, some laptop computers will have a switch to turn the wireless RF radio on / off. If you see the following icon after enabling your wireless network interface, you might have a RF radio on / off switch. See your laptop owner’s manual for the location of the wireless radio RF switch if your computer has one.
Once your laptop is connected to a wireless access point the red X will disappear. Depending on your PC, you might also see green bars indicating the signal strength of your wireless connection.
An alternate way to check if your wireless network card is enabled:
If your Wireless Network Connection is disabled, right-click the wireless icon and scroll down to enable the interface.
You should then see the red X and an indication that you are not yet connected to the wireless network.
