Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science
Anxiety Disorders Clinic

Type: Cognitive behavioral therapy

Setting: Medical school clinic

Location: 3333 Green Bay Rd.
North Chicago, IL 60064

Description of Practicum: The Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Treatment and Research Program provides a broad range of diagnostic and treatment services for anxiety related problems including panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, various phobias, including social phobia, and more generalized problems involving excessive anxiety and worry. The treatment procedures with the most extensive empirical support are used in the cognitive-behavioral intervention programs provided at the clinic. The clinic treatment program emphasizes the acquisition of adaptive life skills. Clients are helped in systematically approaching fears and concerns in a supportive environment. Specialty services of the clinic include an intensive three week program for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Highly effective exposure therapy and response prevention procedures are used to help clients in overcoming obsessions and compulsions. Clients completing the intensive treatment program are seen in follow-up individual therapy to help them maintain their gains and achieve further improvements in their functioning. We also offer an obsessive-compulsive disorder support group. The clinic's panic disorder treatment program is a highly structured individual therapy program involving weekly sessions that continue over a three to six month period. Clients are provided with educational information regarding the nature of anxiety responses, relaxation training to modulate anxiety, and cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy interventions target the catastrophic thinking that often occurs when panic attacks begin. Clients are helped in reducing their fears of specific situations, and in eliminating the general agoraphobic avoidance seen when panic disorder develops
