Type: Adult outpatient psychotherapy; strong emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy
Setting: Group practice affiliated with ENH Evanston Hospital
Description of Practicum: Students who participate in the CBT practicum will conduct individual and group psychotherapy within the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Center (MADC). As the name implies, MADC serves the needs for treatment for those patients having primary mood or anxiety diagnoses. The Center will undertake to perform the most scientifically appropriate treatments for these populations, as well as to provide academic instruction to mental health trainees of various disciplines and conduct relevant research. The mainstay of psychotherapy within MADC is cognitive behavior therapy.
The staff of MADC consists of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers. Clinical training is a core feature of our mission and psychology externs and psychiatry residents play an integral role in our treatment programs.
Practicum Requirements: This is an advanced practicum for 3rd and 4th year students with knowledge in CBT theory. Therapy practicum trainees are expected to spend 10 hours per week at MADC. A full caseload for the practicum is five individual psychotherapy hours and one hour of group therapy. Initially, and from time to time, trainees will be undertaking diagnostic evaluations of patients seeking treatment at MADC. Trainees should expect to present their evaluations, and /or their therapy patients for review at our weekly clinical staff conference.
Attendance is required at the weekly clinical staff conference (on Thursday mornings). Trainees should also plan to co-lead psychotherapy groups on Monday Evenings. Clinical supervision will consist of individual, group and videotaped supervision. Hours of supervisions are arranged with psychology staff supervisor(s).
Supervision: At least 2 hrs direct face-to-face supervision per week and 1 hr supervision in multidisciplinary setting
