The Isaac Ray Forensic Group
Type: Forensic Neuropsychology
Setting: Clinicians and mental health consultants formerly affiliated with the Isaac Ray Center, Inc., the section of Psychiatry and Law at Rush University Medical Center, now a private private practice, but with multiple ties through research and teaching at the University of Chicago, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and DePaul University College of Law.
Description of Practicum: Students evaluate criminal defendants, civil plaintiffs, worker compensation claimants, law enforcement agents and impaired professionals, learning interviewing and assessment techniques relevant to the forensic setting. Risk assessment, malingering, psychological and neuropsychological assessment, DSM-IV diagnosis and report writing are critical aspects of the casework. A weekly mental health and law course is taught by Jan Brakel, J.D., a mental health and disability attorney and Professor at the DePaul University College of Law, in which students learn about landmark cases and the statutes and guidelines associated with state and federal law. Clinical correlations are provided by Diana Goldstein, Ph.D. and Lisa Sworowski, Ph.D., the primary clinicians of the practice. Students will have an opportunity to attend attorney meetings, depositions and court testimony.
Practicum Requirements: Advanced training required. A neuropsychology externship is a must prior to this experience, include training at such sites as the neuropsychology services of the University of Chicago, University of Illinois, or Medical College of Wisconsin.
