Description of Practicum: Graduate practicum students are provided with training in the administration of neuropsychological tests, case conceptualization, report writing, and diagnosis of neurobehavioral disorders. Students also observe patient interviews and feedback sessions, as well as attend didactic seminars.

Practicum Requirements: Students typically spend one year in this practicum setting, though some have arranged to add an additional year of training.  It is required that students spend at least one clinic day per week in this practicum.  The primary activities involve gaining proficiency in test administration/scoring of neuropsychological tests and writing of report drafts of the cases they see, with direct supervision by faculty or residents.  If scheduling permits, students are welcome to attend an evening parent training group series.  Participation in didactics and research are encouraged.

Supervision:   Students receive supervision from psychometric technicians, neuropsychology residents, and faculty.  Supervision is ongoing throughout the day, with frequent periods of supervision regarding test selection, testing progress, case conceptualization, and report writing.

Supervisor(s): Robert Newby, Ph.D., Mariellen Fisher, Ph.D., Amy Heffelfinger, Ph.D.

Didactic Training Opportunities: MCW Neuropsychology clinic is part of an academic medical center and has a post-doctoral training program that follows the Houston Conference and Division 40 Guidelines for neuropsychology training and there are typically 3-4 full time neuropsychology residents on the adult track and 1-2 on the child track each year.  Associated with this training program are Neurology Grand Rounds, Neuropsychology Case Conference, Neuropsychology Journal Club, Clinical Neurology Series, Neurobehavioral Science Course, Biophysics Conference, Neuropsychology Seminar, fMRI Brown Bag, Epilepsy Case Conference, Dementia Clinic Case Conference.

Application Process: Students should submit a letter of interest and current curriculum vita for our records.  Also, students will be contacted for an informal interview prior to acceptance into the program.  Contact Robert Newby, Ph.D.,  rnewby@mcw.edu, 414-805 5660

Application Deadline: Since the majority of students begin their practicum year during the summer months, we would prefer that students contact us by May 1 of the previous academic year.
