Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program of Chicago Medical School at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science!

Looking back at the three years spent as Residents at CMS, we can tell you with convictionthat it was our Residency training that catapulted us to reach our long term goals, and acted as a fertile training ground for
becoming competent physicians. Our training at CMS was multifaceted and provided us the right mix ofclinical exposure, extensive didactics, ample teaching opportunities, and abundant leadership prospects. The two clinical sites Mount Sinai Hospital in downtown Chicago and theNorth Chicago Veterans Administration Medical Center - equip us with the essential clinical skillsand proficiency to deal with various pathologies in diverse patient populations with regards to age,co-morbidities, and social issues.

The recent merger of the North Chicago VA with the Great Lakes Naval Base Hospital Emergency Departments, the first of its kind in the US, haspropelled our clinical case spectrum to a new high. We diagnose and treat young Navy recruitswho have medical conditions unique to the Armed Forces owing to their rigorous training, barrackshousing, and their family members who represent the prototypical suburban patient population. In short, we have an inner city urban hospital exposure, a suburban experience, and the distinctive, combined VA/Navy setting. Our distinguished faculty with marked expertise provide us with exposure to topical clinical concepts and therapeutic modalities. In addition, our faculty members are compassionate and truly enjoy working with residents and medical students.

Our Program has the right balance of clinical practice and academics. It offers an atmosphere which promotes collegiality and teamwork between house staff and attendings along with a high level of resident autonomy. All these coupled with an environment of intellectual curiosity and a dedication to patient care make CMS incomparable to most other programs in the US. Any residency poses significant challenges that prepare its members to become good physicians, but CMS affords a supportive environment that yields results, enabling our residents to match at a top fellowship programs or secure excellent practice opportunities.

The leaders of our Residency Program take pride in the array of didactic opportunities offered to our
Residentin order to prepare them to practice in the real world as well as equip them to face the Internal Medicine Boards. Other than daily morning reports and well coordinated and planned subspecialty conferences, this Program also offers monthly radiology conferences, EKG conferences, evidence-based medicine sessions, journal clubs, and weekly primary care reports. There are weekly grand rounds at both clinical sites which feature excellent teachers and leaders in their respective fields. Once a month we also have one of our ER physicians moderate discussions of complex Internal Medicine cases from an ER perspective. All of these conferences are summarized by our residents highlighting a handful of take-home points; these are then e-mailed to all of our residents and medical students to review.

Research has become an integral part of the training we receive at CMS with our residents being involved in basic science research including stem cell research as well as clinical studies. Our residents have published avidly inthe last few years in the form of posters and oral presentations in national meetings and as manuscripts in leading journals.

In spite of all these achievements and activities, we do manage to have fun and organize social events for members of our Program. We have ample time to have a life outside of the hospitals to enjoy with our families and friends. The call schedules are published on the web well up to six months in advance to give our residents enough time to plan their lives around important dates, key conferences, and other personal events. Chicago is one of the most exhilarating, diverse, and action packed cities in the world and we have opportunities to savor the spirit of the city while being productive residents.

Our overarching goal at RFUMS is to create an educational and clinical environment that provides residents with superior training in Internal Medicine. We have designed a program in which the values of academic scholarship and critical thinking are integrated with a concern for personal development and emotional maturity. We are confident that after completing our residency training programs, the residents can reflect on the decision to come to our department for Internal Medicine training with a deep sense of achievement and satisfaction, knowing that he or she has both improved as a physician, and been enriched as a person. We wish you best of luck for your future endeavors
