An interdisciplinary approach to the structure and function of the nervous system is presented by Department faculty. This course, designed for both medical and graduate students, provides a broad introduction to modern neuroscience, emphasizing: 1) cellular neuroscience, including neurochemistry of transmitters and receptor function; 2) systems neuroscience, focusing on motor, somatosensory, and sensory systems; 3) neuroanatomy laboratories, utilizing human autopsy material and interactive computer-based learning, as well as plastinated sections and 3-D dissections prepared by the faculty; 4) clinical neuroscience, focusing on neurological and psychiatric disorders, presented both in lecture format and in clinical correlation sessions which include patient presentations.
Prerequisites: Mammalian physiology, previously or concurrently, and permission of the instructor. Spring Quarter, 10 hours per week (7 units).
