M3 Research Elective Credit

Students who perform directed, supervised, structured research in the third year may petition to receive elective credit towards the fourth year elective requirements

  1. All requests must be approved at least three months in advance by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Medical Education.
  2. Students must submit a written description of the research project, including aims and objectives, project description, setting, time commitment, faculty supervision, and expected outcomes.
  3. All requests MUST be accompanied by a letter from the faculty supervisor verifying the project and the student’s participation.
  4. Documentation – including a completed Extamural Elective Request Form -- should be sent to Erika Ulrichs in the CMS Office for Student Affairs.
  5. The maximum length of time allowed for research during the third year is 8 weeks, and must be done within one third-year clerkship slot.  the only Clerkship you may postpone in the M3 year is Emergency Medicein or Neurlogy. A maximum of 8 weeks of non-clinical elective credit is allowed towards graduation, so any student using this amount of time will have used all permitted non-clinical elective time.
  6. Students must contact Alegra Bohlen in the CMS Office for Student Affairs regarding plans to complete outstanding clerkship requirements in the M4 year. Students must complete all delayed, required third-year rotations BY DECEMBER 31 of the senior year. Make up site and dates  will be determined by the Office of Student Affairs. Requests for dates and sites will be considered, however it is up to the descretion of the OSA where and when you will make up the Clerkship.
