COURSES AVAILABLE TO MEDICAL STUDENTS

IN THE SOPHOMORE YEAR
SOPHOMORE PATHOLOGY COURSE

    • is required of all students
    • is designed to provide a suitable background in pathology for further studies in medicine, to bridge the basic science and clinical disciplines, and to provide a vocabulary of disease as well as a basic understanding of the responses of cells and organ systems to disease processes
    • is also designed to provide knowledge of the principal disorders of each organ system and to facilitate a reasoned approach to the use of diagnostic laboratory testing

PATHOLOGY HONORS PROGRAM

    • is offered to selected students during the second and third quarters of the regular sophomore pathology course
    • consists of a group of hospital experiences which supplement the regular laboratory sessions of the course
    • provides an enhanced opportunity to integrate the learning of pathology with its application to the practice of medicine

SPECIAL PATHOLOGY STUDY GROUP

    • is open to all interested students enrolled in the regular sophomore pathology course
    • is conducted on-site at CMS
    • consists of a series of microscopic slide review sessions led by one of our hospital-based faculty

SOPHOMORE ELECTIVES

    • are open to all students
    • include (among others): Transfusion Medicine, Geographic Pathology and Tropical Medicine, Applied Neuropathology, Electron Microscopic Diagnosis, Advanced Hematology, Chemical Pathology, Diagnostic Microbiology, Pathogenetic Mechanisms in Human Disease

IN THE JUNIOR YEAR
JOURNAL CLUB/SEMINAR

    • is open to all students

IN THE SENIOR YEAR
ELECTIVE CLERKSHIPS IN PATHOLOGY

    • open to all students
    • provide an in-depth exposure to the practice of pathology as a medical specialty

ELECTIVE FORENSIC PATHOLOGY CLERKSHIP

    • provides an in-depth exposure to the practice of pathology in the investigation of death from trauma and maladventure

FELLOWSHIP IN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL PATHOLOGY

    • is available to one student each year
    • optionally extends for 4, 8, or 12 weeks
    • carries a stipend awarded by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
