Overview and Departmental Mission

The principal mission of the department is to provide our medical students with a suitable background in pathology for their further studies in medicine. This primary goal is principally addressed in a required course extending over three quarters of the second year.

Another goal is the maintenance of a continuing educational interface with students during their remaining medical school years. In the hospital setting we attempt to teach by example through the provision of pathology and clinical laboratory services and by helping students with integration of the information thus gained into patient case and into increased understanding of the mechanisms of disease. Yet another closely related goal is the provision of a similar relationship with residents participating in school-sponsored programs.

Also, the department conducts graduate programs in our own department and offers support for graduate students from other departments.

In addition, we administer the pathology course for students in the second year at Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, as well as students in the pathologists' assistant program in the College of Health Professions.
