David A.S. Garfield, M.D. Professor and Associate Chair for Development and Psychotherapy Curriculum Director of Psychiatry Residency Training
Dr. Garfield directed our residency program from 1988-1999. He teaches multiple residency courses. A graduate of the residency at Harvard’s Massachusetts Mental Health Center, he is board certified and has written many articles on psychotherapy for psychotic patients. Dr. Garfield has advanced training in psychoanalysis through Chicago’s Institute for Psychoanalysis. His book, Unbearable Affect, discusses psychotherapy of psychosis. In 1998, the residents chose him as their teacher of the year, and he was also awarded teacher of the year at the VA Medical Center in 2001 and 2002. At the Clinics at Rosalind Franklin University, he directs our Student Mental Health Program.
