Frederick Sierles, M.D.
Professor and Director of Medical Student Education

Dr. Sierles has devoted his professional career to psychiatric education. Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry at CMS from 1974-1994, and 2003 to the present, coordinated and taught a broad variety of courses and clerkships, and won many awards for basic science and clinical teaching. In 1993, CMS’s alumni association chose him as its 1993 distinguished alumnus. In 1996 and 2001, the residents chose him as their teacher of the year. He won the NIH-APA Seymour Vestermark Award for distinguished lifetime contributions to psychiatric education. He is a past president of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, a member of the editorial board of Academic Psychiatry, and a past member of the Executive Council of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training. A 1967 graduate of CMS and a 1971 graduate of our residency, he has published extensively on psychiatric education . He is on the Executive Council of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the editorial board of Academic Psychiatry, and chairs the multiorganizational psychiatry Workforce Coalition.
