Department of Surgery Mission

Welcome to the Department of Surgery! The Department of Surgery is committed to providing Medical Students and Graduate Trainees an understanding of the surgical management of disease in a caring, thoughtful manner. The curriculum is structured to provide this education while meeting the six competencies of Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Communication, Professionalism, Practice Based Learning and Systems Based Practice. The use of Best Practices will be an integral part of the learning experience.

The organizational structure of the Department involves multiple surgical specialties (see list) organized at a number of different sites (see list). The ongoing challenge for us in Surgery is to assure that students at these different locations all have similar experiences. This in part achieved in part through the unifying core lecture series, which is attended by all students, and mini-conferences which are held at the different sites.
