Molecular biology on the Web

In this week's session, we will look at a variety of molecular biology materials which are available.

I really like the collection of information at 123genomics.com. Pick the "Sequence Analysis" link to be overwhelmed, or explore some of the other links at the top of the home page.
Genamics.com has an extensive listing of software and databases; some are free, some are demo versions of commercial programs.
The European Bioinformatics Institute has a good collection of downloadable databases and software. Go to the 'Downloads' under the 'Tools' menu on EBI's home page. There you can download assorted databases. Look also at the 'Software' (it's not easy to tell what's there--you may have to just explore).
Keith Robison (Harvard) has a very extensive and up-to-date Biosciences Index page.
The ExPASy (Expert Protein Analysis System) proteomics server has links to many databases and software packages.

Some other useful sites:

The Restriction Enzyme Database (REBASE) is maintained by Nobel laureate Rich Roberts at New England Biolabs. This site has links to other useful sites such as NEBcutter and WebCutter, which will let you input a gene sequence, then find restriction sites for you.
The Staden Package, which is free to academics, has numerous utilities for those who are sequencing nucleotides.

There are lots of programs available which are useful for molecular biologists. For this session, you are encouraged to explore some of the locations listed above and see what programs may be of use to you.
