Sophomore Elective Course
MPSY 699 Evaluating a Patient from a Different Culture Through Cinema
(10 weeks, Dr. Vaidya)
Students will understand how culture facilitates and hinders medical care, and learn the skills which will enable them to interview patients from different cultures through the use of film.  This course will discuss topics from a student's perspective and cross culture communication patterns and their impact on clinical care.
Senior Elective Courses
(Note:  Prerequisites for all senior elective courses:  successful completion of the 
Clerkship in Basic Psychiatry and departmental permission.)
MPSY 817 Child Psychiatry
(All quarters, 40 hours, Dr. Sarma)
The goal of this course is to enable students contemplating a career in pediatrics (or child psychiatry) to gain valuable experience in treating children, adolescents and their families in an active outpatient setting.  Under the supervision of board certified child psychiatrists, students assume the role of house staff and diagnose and treat a variety of patients.  A number of therapeutic models are used, and the student is considered part of the treatment team. 
MPSY 825 Clinical Elective in Forensic Psychiatry
(3-4 weeks, 40 hours/week, Dr. Daghestani)
The student will become familiar with the specialized clinical and medicolegal issues surrounding treatment of patients adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity and Unable to Stand Trial.
MPSY 830 Neurosychiatry Clinical Elective
(4-6 weeks, 40 hours/week, Dr. Vaidya)
Students will spend four weeks working closely with attendings at the North Chicago Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Ann M. Kiley Center, and the RFUMS Health System Behavioral Health Center.  Students will be assigned to the neurobehavioral clinic, neuropsychiatric clinic, the women's psychiatric clinic and the developmental disability clinic.  Students will evaluate patients with Parkinson's disease, head injury, epilepsy and developmental delay.
MPSY 890 Addiction Medicine 
(4 weeks, 40 hours/week, Dr. Doot)
Inpatient and outpatient experience, lectures on detox and midical complications, cocaine, hallucinogens,inhalants, smoking, diangosis and screening; group therapy expereince. 
MPSY 891 Psychotherapy Elective
(4 weeks, 40 hours/week, Drs. Garfield, Weiss, Bair, Zaror)
This elective will expose senior medical students to the basics of psychotherapy theory and practice through required readings and patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings. 
MPSY 899 Sleep Disorders Clinic and ECT
(3-4 weeks, Drs. Simon, Moss)
This elective will combine two specialty clinics:  1)  the ECT Clinic, which involves ECT consultations and student participation in all aspects of administering ECT; and 2) the Sleep Disorders Clinic, which will expose students to common sleep disorders, in addition to learning about the laboratory investigations of sleep disorders and the various tests used, and their role in managing sleep disorders.
