Kids 1st Health Fair
The 19th Annual Kids 1st Health Fair was, by every measure, a huge success thanks to the support of generous donors and enthusiastic volunteers. Together we served a total of 955 children, providing them with 525 school physicals, 394 dental screenings, 556 immunizations, 201 lead and hemoglobin tests, 262 TB tests, and 198 podiatric screenings.  In addition, over 900 backpacks filled with school supplies were fitted and distributed and 6,000 age-appropriate books were given to children who participated in the Fair.

Of the children served, 677 (71 percent) received more than one core services (physical exams, dental exams, and/or immunizations) and 376 children (39 percent) received nutrition counseling.  In an effort to increase the number of children who report to the TB clinic to have their test results confirmed, gift card incentives were offered.  The special funding used for these cards nearly tripled the test-reading rates from 38 to 83 percent!  In line with increased national efforts to reduce the rate of childhood diabetes in the United States, 525 children were screened for diabetes.

The Kids 1st Health Fair would not be possible without our dedicated supporters, including major funding support from The Abbott Fund. Additional financial contributors included Baxter Healthcare Corp., First Bank of Highland Park, and North Shore University Health System/Highland Park Hospital. We are grateful to in-kind contributors who each donated more than $1,000 worth of product: Bernie's Book Bank, JRS Distribution Co., and Medline Industries. We also thank nearly 700 community volunteers who gave of their expertise and compassion. On behalf of the families and children served this year, we offer our heart-felt thanks to all.

The Kids 1st Health Fair would never happen if not for our dedicated corps of community volunteers. Nearly 700 medical and non-medical service providers –250-plus representing Rosalind Franklin University – gave unsparingly of their time and expertise. On behalf of the families and the children that were served this year, thank you.
