CMS Accreditation Updates

Welcome to the Chicago Medical School accreditation update page. Our intent is to use this page to keep the CMS community and all its partners up-to-date and informed about the steps we are taking to address and resolve the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) issues relating to CMS. For more information about matters specific to the LCME visit: www.lcme.org.

What the Chicago Medical School Community Should Know:

  1. Chicago Medical School was placed on probation by the LCME October 14, 2013 and remains fully accredited while on probation.
  2. Members of the dean's staff were assigned and are accountable for the standards that are of concern and teams are working on action plans to address the issues.
  3. Through the strength of our students, faculty and staff, we have made significant progress in addressing the areas outlined by the LCME. Following its regular meeting Feb. 25-27, the LCME determined the areas of concern are no longer in “non-compliance.” The LCME considers these areas to be “in compliance with a need for monitoring.”
  4. The LCME has established key milestones over the next 12 months in which it will review our progress.
  5. This situation has demonstrated the importance of fostering an environment of even greater collaboration and innovation.

LCME Site Visit January 25-28, 2015

This calculation is based on the work plan that has been developed for each of the fourteen competencies that are in compliance with a need for monitoring, using a simple mathematical equation of tasks completed divided by total number of tasks. It is a representation of the work effort by the school's administration, faculty and staff.

The president's cabinet meeting today again reaffirmed my belief that we are a university whose mission is not something we just espouse, but we live and breathe.  The interprofessional collegiality and spirit rang loud and clear as the deans of the other colleges, the EVP/COO, the CFO, and the vice presidents have offered their expertise and shifted priorities to be of assistance to CMS.  

On another very important note, in a very short time our Creative Media Center (CMC) created an active web site with the beginnings of our LCME progress updates. The CMC's efforts were just one example today of employees going above and beyond their usual work effort to put CMS in the best possible position moving forward.  I am very excited about the website being a place where everyone can learn about our issues, can contribute ideas and see the effort that our faculty, staff, students and administration are pouring into this process, making sure we do it right.

At the end of the day I had a telephone conference call with all of the accountable deans and leads for the citations that are in non-compliance. We discussed expectations, deadlines, timelines and outcomes. We also discussed the upcoming LCME secretariat visit and how we need to approach that so that we can get the most out of it.
