Honors, Awards Alan L. Buchman, MD, MSPH, CMS ’86, Anita S. Kablinger, MD, CMS ’93, and Manoj Monga, MD, FACS, CMS ’90, were each presented with the 2005 Chicago Medical School Distinguished Alumni Award on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the 26th Annual CMS Alumni Weekend Dinner Dance held at the Chicago School of the Art Institute Ballroom. This honor is presented to CMS alumni who have distinguished themselves in the medical profession and have exemplified consistent commitment and dedication to the Chicago Medical School and the CMS Alumni Association. David J. Hirsch, CMS ’77, was named one of the top physicians in the state of New Jersey by the “New Jersey Monthly Magazine”. Dr. Hirsch’s specialty is obstetrics/gynecology. Walter A. Chameides, MD, CMS ’61, Clinical Professor at LA County, USC Medical Center, was awarded “Attending of the Year” for 2005-2006 in recognition of his excellent mentoring and teaching. Brad Wenstrup, DPM SCPM ''85, has returned from Abu Ghraib, Iraq where he served as the prison's Chief of Surgery. Dr. Wenstrup, who is a U.S. Army Reserve Major, was awarded the Bronze Star, spent 11 months and 18 days treating prisoners as well as any other casualties, American or otherwise. He estimates that he treated up to 5,000 detainees. Dr. Charles Cowan, CMS ’68, clinical director, Care Coordination Services at Children’s Hospital and clinical professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington received the Duncan Award. Dr. Cowan was presented with the award for his outstanding work in developmental pediatrics. Dr. Mitchell Sheinkop, CMS ’67, was awarded the Dr. David Applebaum International Humanitarian Award by The Midwest Region of the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Dr. Sheinkop was given this honor for his dedication to educating other orthopedic surgeons worldwide with his innovative surgical techniques for hip and knee replacement surgery. He has operated on more than 250 patients overseas and has been invited to lecture and teach in 11 Arab and Muslim countries on 27 occasions since 2001. Five Alumni were honored during the month of March as “Women You Should Know” by Rosalind Franklin University’s Women’s History Month Committee. They are: Alfreda Sluzewski, DPM, SCPM ‘37 Francine R. Interviews and Articles Dr. Alan J. Reis, CMS ’95, was featured in the “Pittsburgh Tribune-Review” July 29, 2006. The article entitled “Doctor’s system helps identify drug abusers” addressed the growing problem of addiction to prescription drugs. Dr. Reis and his company DR Pharma Nova LLP have invented a system that can stamp out prescription drug abuse. A patent is pending for this system. Dr. Thomas Vogel, SCPM’87 was interviewed, April 22, 2006, in the Noblesville Times in an article entitled, “It’s important to keep feet, ankles healthy.” Dr. Vogel has 18 years of experience in the field of podiatry and recently opened his own private practice, Hamilton Foot and Ankle Clinic, in the Fishers, IN area. Dr. Chester Cheng, CMS ’94, was featured in the Contra Costa Times (February ’06) for his expertise in the field of Plastic Surgery. Richard S. Blum, M.D., CMS ’63, Clinical Pharmacology of the Appeals and Exception Process: The Interface of the Patient, Physician, and Insurance Company to Assure Appropriate Care Under Medicare Part D, was recently published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2006. Mitchell Sheinkop, MD, CMS ’67, was featured in the Chicago Tribune (March 5, 2006) for his international humanitarianism in accepting an invitation by the United Arab Emirates to teach doctors a joint replacement technique he has pioneered. Dr. Michael Worpell, SCPM ’87, was featured in an article in the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette on 12/24/05 “Christmukkah” family – Couple celebrate Jewish, Christian roots.
Joins Staff and/or Board Ramon A. Quesada, MD, CMS ’02, has joined the staff in the PM & R Department at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City, CA. Brent G. Greenberg, MD, CMS ’94, has joined the newly created medical advisory board of Dermacare Laser & Skin Care Clinics. Bret B. Abshire, MD, CMS ’94 was named to the Alphatec Holdings, Inc. Scientific Advisory Board, a medical device company that provides customized products and a broad suite of spine fusion solutions. Dr. Abshire is a noted neurosurgeon with an area of expertise which includes disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine and is skilled in complex re-operative spine surgeries and spinal instrumentation. Michael L. Chaikin, MD, CMS ’75 was elected Chief of Staff and appointed Medical Director of the Coronary and Intensive Care Unit at the new doctor-owned Century City Doctors Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. Joseph T. Hogan, DPM, SCPM ’75, is Director of United Health Services PM&S – 36 Residency Program in Binghamton, NY John J. Hutcheson, MD, CMS ’89, is Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at Winchester Hospital and Director of Pain Management, Synergy Pain Management Specialists in Woburn, MA. Dr. Michael C. Damask, CMS ’74, has been named Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at the EpiCept Corporation. He brings over 30 years of experience in clinical research and drug development to EpiCept. Jennifer C. Imig-Burdett, Ph.D., SGPDS '04 has joined the staff at the Zablocki VA Medical Center as a neuropsychologist. John Sladek, PhD, SGPDS '71 has been named President and Chief Executive Officer at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. Nichelle Pajeau, PA CHP '06 has been appointed to the Clinics at Rosalind Franklin University Jason A. Rothbart, MD CMS '01 is now practicing at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Adam L. Palance, MD CMS '00 has recently completed a Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship at UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and will be doing a year of advanced endoscopic training in NYC at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Richard Hellman, FACP, FACE, CMS '66, was elected President Elect of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) at its Fifteenth Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress in Chicago on April 29, 2006. Daniel J. Hatch, DPM, SCPM '78, has been named President-Elect of the Board of Directors of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) for 2006-2007. He succeeds John J. Stienstra, DPM, SCPM ’80. Lisa Dionisi, PA, CHP '05, has been appointed to the College of Health Professions Alumni Board. Drs. Angela Nuzzarello, CMS '86 and Carey Strom, CMS '80, have joined the Board of Governors of the Chicago Medical School Alumni Association. Dr. C. James Anderson, SCPM '99, has joined the Albright Footcare Centers with offices in Lewisburg and Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Dr. Richard Bank, CMS '60, was appointed to the Board of Directors of Arbios Systems, Inc. Dr. Rushia Butler, CMS '97, has been added to the staff of the Department of Family Medicine at Hammond Clinic in Northwest Indiana. Dr. Steven Lasin, CMS '89, was appointed Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Lake Forest Hospital. Dr. Sebastian Benenati, SCPM '82, has joined the medical staff of St. Joseph's Healthcare in Michigan.

Miscellaneous Karen S. Crain, PT, CHP ’80, recently received her certification as a Pediatric Clinical Specialist. She is Director of Physical Therapy Services for THERAPY 2000, a pediatric home health agency in Dallas, TX. Michael L. Chaikin, MD, CMS 75, was elected Chief of Staff and appointed Medical Director of the Coronary and Intensive Care Unit at the new doctor-owned Century City Doctors Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. Ketan Rajendra Mody, MD CMS ’03, is currently a sports medicine fellow at the University of Connecticut. Keith Whitaker, PA, CHP ’04, has just returned from a two week medical mission trip to Duchity, Haiti. He was one of nine health care professionals whose goal was to see 1000 patients and actually saw 1500. Dr. Brad McGuire, CMS ’97, SGPDS ’95, recently presented a seminar to the Microbiology and Immunology Department of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at Rosalind Franklin University. Dr. McGuire is Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Center for Microbial Interface Biology at Ohio State University. Dr. Doug Chapman, CMS ’84, was appointed Director of CCU, Inpatient Services and Heart Failure at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Scott W. Strenger, CMS ’82, was awarded the Masters of Medical Management (MMM) from the Department of Health Systems Management, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 2002. He was currently appointed as Medical Director, Shore Memorial Hospital Neurosciences Center and Clinical Associate, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Eugene Saltzberg, CMS ’72, was recently recertified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
