  • On Nov. 22, the annual Diwali cultural celebration of music, dance and food was held on campus. One of the biggest and joyous festivals of Hindus in India, Deepawali or Diwali, is celebrated for five continuous days with the third day being celebrated as the Festival of Lights.

  • The Operations Division of the Emergency Evacuation Team conducted a campus alert drill on October 23 for all RFUMS faculty, staff and students.   • The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) reports that U.S. medical schools continue to expand enrollment to meet the nation’s increasing demand for physicians, including a 10 percent increase in Latino first-year medical students.

  • The October issue of Academic Medicine, published by the AAMC, featured on its front cover one of the paintings in the University’s current “Fine Arts Examine the Medical Arts” exhibit and included a one-page description of it.   
  • The October issue of the APMA News, published by the American Podiatric Medical Association, featured a two-page story on the Toepp-Neuhoff family, boasting four generations of Scholl College graduates.  
  • In the October issue of Podiatry Today, Terence B. Albright, DPM, dean of the Dr. William M. School College of Podiatric Medicine, stated his views on the need to increase both the number of DPMs and minority graduates to address a national healthcare shortage.    
  • A recent article in Psychological Reports ranked the nation’s graduate programs in psychology based on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) scores for 1997-2005.  The Psychology Department at Rosalind Franklin University was ranked 26th among 207 clinical doctoral programs in the United States and Canada, ahead of the University of Virginia, Yale University and University of Southern California.  
  • On October 12, the Baltimore Sun interviewed CMS faculty member Lise Eliot, PhD, in an article on single-sex education for middle-school boys.   
  • On October 6, Crain’s Chicago Business featured Mrs. Ruth Rothstein, chair of the RFUMS Board of Trustees, in her leadership role as the former president and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital and chief of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services.
     
  • On October 17, WGN-TV featured Janice Gilden, MD, CMS, in her work at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in assisting patients of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Click here to see the two-minute video news clip.
     
  • On October 6, the Lake County News-Sun published a feature story on the first-time use of Turning Technologies audience response devices by community audiences at the 2008  Mini-Medical School. 
     
  • On October 23, the Chicago Tribune included an obituary on Herbert M. Rubinstein, MD, former faculty member in the Chicago Medical School. 

   University Feature Stories

  • Physical Therapy graduate, Rick Hartman ‘98, designs a patient-centered career and launches his own clinic. 
      
  • Graphic designer Ray Narbone trained for five months and completed his first Chicago Marathon race on October 12 with 33,000 other runners.

  • On October 7, the 2008 Mini-Medical School program opened with presentations given by Dr. Welch on “Brain Attack: Profile, Prevention and Treatment of Stroke” and by Dr. Janice Gilden on “Blood Sugar Blues: How to Best Manage Your Diabetes.” Approximately 350 community residents attended the four-week program.   • Phillip Morreale, DPM ’84, was featured in the October 12 Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier  Iowa newspaper.
  • Wendy Stinson, DPM ’91, was featured in the October 17 New Jersey Jewish Standard newspaper for her interview on the New Jersey TV Network.

  • The September 10 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the enrollment size of 108 medical schools across the nation. The Chicago Medical School with its enrollment of 755 students was listed 18th among both public and private medical schools and seventh among private institutions.   • The Fresno Bee of Fresno, California published a feature story on September 21 about fourth-year CMS student Derek Ailes, who received medical training in Yosemite National Park for injured hikers.   
  • The September issue of Chicago Hospital News published a story on the cocaine addiction research of Dr. Marina Wolf.  
  • On September 13, The Lake County News-Sun published an article on a $49,000 grant received by the University from the Lake County Community Foundation to develop a free mobile health screening and referral clinic.

  • On August 25, David and Beverly Klintworth donated the painting “The Gift” by Ken Dewaard to Rosalind Franklin University. It is one of artworks featured in the “Fine Arts Examine the Medical Arts” special exhibit. The student subject in the painting, Lindsay Klintworth, DPT, is their daughter who graduated in June 2008.   • On August 25, approximately 300 RFUMS students had their first encounter with cadavers in the Dr. John J. Sheinin Gross Anatomy Laboratory. Click here to see selected photos taken by Mike Murphy.    
  • On August 29, Phillip Gianfortune, DPM, and Neil Horsley, DPM, Scholl College, provided free foot screenings to 44 patients at Chicago’s Hull House. They were joined by students Molly Meier and Pedro Zelaya.    
  • On September 13, Karona Mason, DPM, Scholl College, and students Eunice Bello, Quinton Yeldell, Bennie Patmon, James Johnson, Adrienne Merriweather Winton, James Fullwood and Nneka Meka provided free footcare screenings for more than 30 people at the Chicago South Side YMCA.    
  • On September 12-13, RFUMS hosted a workshop provided by David Kosson, PhD, Psychology, and Adelle Forth, PhD, Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) “Assessing Psychopathy in Youth: Clinical and Forensic Applications of the Hare PCL:YV.” Participants included psychologists, psychiatrists and students from the U.S., Canada and New Zealand. 
  • About 120 second and third-year Scholl College students attended the annual Clerkship and Residency Faire on  September 12 from 9:00-1:00 p.m. More than 40 hospitals and clinics participated. Click here to see a few selected photos taken by Sandra Mesrine.

  • On September 5, the Cleveland Jewish News announced that Fred C. Rothstein, MD '76, executive vice president of University Hospitals and president of University Hospitals Case Medical Center received the American Jewish Committee’s Richard H. Adler Community Leadership Award.    
  • On September 9, the Auburn, New York The Citizen newspaper featured a profile Scholl College graduate, Daniel Thomas Smith, DPM '00.    
  • On September 13, the Emporia, Kansas Gazette published a short feature story on Paul McDonald, MD '98.   
  • On September 13, the Patriot Ledger newspaper of Quincy, Massachusetts published the appointment of James. E. Fanale, MD ’76, to the position of Vice President of Operations at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

  • Steven Chen, third-year Chicago Medical School student and recipient of a Schweitzer Fellowship, was featured July 24 in his hometown San Marino, CA newspaper.
     
  • The Chicago Tribune on August 3 published a feature obituary on Laurence Rubenstein, MD, former chair of thoracic surgery at CMS.
     
  • Crain’s Chicago Business on August 11 featured a story on the redevelopment of the former CMS property on Ogden Avenue in Chicago.
     
  • Lise Eliot, PhD, Neuoscience, co-wrote an Op-Ed article opposing separate gender classrooms published August 20 in USA Today, the nation’s largest newspaper.
     
  • The Chicago Tribune on August 24 published an obituary on Marshall A. Falk, MD, former CMS dean and RFUMS chancellor.

  • College of Health Professions faculty member, John W. Burns, PhD, has recently received two National Institutes of Health grants, totaling about $2.3 million in the last three years.
     
  • Japanese-born Yumiko Hoeger, 46, rises to the challenges of being a second-year CMS student.
     
  • Stephanie Wu, DPM, MS, Scholl College and CLEAR, published a leading research study on the use of pressure offloading devices in the journal Diabetes Care. Her research was recognized with a third-place award at the 2008 American Podiatric Medical Association scientific meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Wu also recently received the APMA’s Rising Star award.
     
  • 2008 Scholl College graduate Erin Klein, DPM, had her “Clear Cleat 1” research study published as the lead article in the August Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
     
  • Three faculty members from Scholl College and CLEAR presented four abstracts from recent studies at the North American Congress on Biomechanics (NACOB) held August in Ann Arbor, MI. They represented the only podiatric medicine institution in the U.S. or Canada.

  • Susan Murrmann, MD, ’87, was featured in the August 17, 2008 Memphis Commercial Appeal, Tennessee’s largest newspaper.
     
  • Joseph Nuzzarello, MD, ’85, was featured about his athletic fundraising efforts in the Athletes for a Cure for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. His father, Dr. Salvatore Nuzzarello graduated from CMS in 1951 and his sister, Dr. Angela Nuzzarello, also graduated from CMS in 1986.
     
  • James Swift, MD, ‘88, was profiled as one of the 20 “2008 Health Care Heroes” in the (Las Vegas) Nevada Business Journal.
