Arthur J. Ross, III, M.D., M.B.A. was appointed Dean of the Chicago Medical School on June 1, 2004. Dr. Ross holds a B.S. from Trinity College, his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and completed a residency in General and Thoracic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Ross completed a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, leading to his interest in the area of calcium and the calcemic hormones, especially as it relates to the neonate. Following his eight years at Duke, Dr. Ross entered the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship Training Program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he spent two clinical years and a third year as the Glenmede Research Fellow in Pediatric Surgery. Upon completion of his training, he joined the faculty at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served as Associate Professor of Surgery, Director of the Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratory and Chairman-Elect of the Committee on Admission at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. While at Penn, Dr. Ross received the Medical School Class of 1992 Recognition for Teaching Excellence Award.

In 1993, Dr. Ross joined the University of Wisconsin Medical School as the Associate Dean for the Western Clinical Campus, and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. He served as Chief Academic Officer for the Gundersen Lutheran Health System and practiced Pediatric Surgery at Gundersen Lutheran’s La Crosse Campus. He was also Director of Medical Education for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation and Chairman of the Department of Staff Development. In 1997, and again in 2003, he was honored with the Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award. While in Wisconsin, Dr. Ross served as a Fellow in Administrative Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, which led to a Master’s Degree in Administrative Medicine. He also received a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Dr. Ross is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and holds memberships in the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, and the American College of Physician Executives.
