Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) have provided anesthesia services for over 125 years. Some 33,000 CRNAs administer approximately 65% of all anesthetics annually in the U.S. CRNAs are the sole anesthesia providers in about two thirds of all rural hospitals, enabling these facilities to provide obstetrical, surgical and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs provide anesthesia to patients in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists and podiatrists. Nurse anesthetists practice in every setting where anesthesia is delivered, including forward combat zones in the Middle East, where they provide the majority of the anesthesia care. The RFUMS Nurse Anesthesia Program is a rigorous 27 month course of study. The curriculum is didactically front-loaded with extensive use of human patient simulation during the first year along with initial clinical practicum. The second portion of the program is a full-time clinical practicum where students will provide anesthesia care to patients across the lifespan, at all acuity levels, undergoing surgical procedures of varying complexity.
