A Message from the CIO on Google Apps

In recent years, the students at Rosalind Franklin University have delivered a clear message that our in-house e-mail system was simply not meeting their needs. Unfortunately, due to the high costs, it is challenging for organizations like ours to constantly play catch-up in the world of technology. The services we provide will always be compared to similar services that are offered for free from various providers on the Internet. Although it is not necessarily a fair comparison because of the difference in business models and revenue streams, this is one of those situations where the customer is always right. The university needed to find a better e-mail solution at a cost effective price. Even a seemingly simple task such as upgrading student mailbox sizes from 75MB to 2GB could cost the university tens of thousands of dollars that would need to be supported by increased tuition costs or the implementation of technology fees. Instead, we have decided to stick to our core institutional functions – education and research – and use our technology dollars to their full potential in those areas. A commodity service such as e-mail is best left to service providers such as Google who can offer the students a better product at very little cost to the university.

Our recent implementation of Google Apps will provide students with a quality e-mail system and other productivity tools that will never fall behind their expectations. In fact, student mailbox sizes have already increased from 2GB to 4GB during the 3 months that we were testing Google’s product. A company like Google has the market strength and advertising revenue to continue enhancing their services and provide our students with the highest quality applications and tools. We look forward to a long relationship with Google and will continue to find other ways to improve the lives of our students through technology.
