Dr. Alan Axelrod
Dr. Axelrod's areas of expertise include bacterial and viral infections of the eyes, dry eyes and other ocular surface disorders, and autoimmune disorders of the eyes.
Dr. Axelrod earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago where he was a James Scholar and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He studied in Edinburgh, Scotland on a Richardson Overseas fellowship.
After interning at Washington University Hospitals in St. Louis, he did his ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois. After a year as a Bausch & Lomb fellow in Cornea/External Disease at the University of Washington in Seattle, Dr. Axelrod returned to the University of Illinois to serve as chief resident in ophthalmology. Following this one-year term as chief resident, Dr. Axelrod was appointed chair of ophthalmology at Cook County Hospital. He was chairman there for 24 years, running a large clinical service and a freestanding ophthalmology residency program. Dr. Axelrod is still on the voluntary staff at Cook County Hospital.
Dr. Axelrod is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, professor of ophthalmology at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and past president of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.
