Instructions for the Ophthalmology 805, MS Surgery Students and Sophomores for Elective in Ophthalmology at Cook County Hospital (Stoger)

On the first day (Monday) of your rotation, go to the CCH Medical Education office (Room 815) on the 8th floor of the Hektoen Institute Bldg. – 627 S. Wood St., so that you can get an official ID for the rotation. Look for LuAnn Jointer, or if she is not there, ask around until you find someone who can help you. LuAnn’s telephone is 312-864-0431. Main telephone for Med. Ed. at County is 312-864-0394.

If you have not taken the BSIS course before or if you haven’t taken it for a year or more, you must get there by 8:15 so that you can take the course. If you have taken the course within the past 12 months (doesn’t necessarily have to have been taken at CCH), you must provide documentation (a letter or certificate) to Med Ed. You must also have proof of having had a PPD (tuberculin) test within the past 12 months.

Once you have obtained your ID, go to the Eye Clinic (Clinic A in the new Stroger Hospital). Report to the Clinic Chief (2nd year resident) or one of the senior residents or Dr. Suri Dwarakanathan (Dr. D), one of the Clinic attendings. At this time, if you don’t already have one, you should obtain a sheet listing the “Learning Objectives for Ophthalmology Elective.”  The telephone number in the Eye Clinic is 312-864-7803.

  • Wear a white coat and dress professionally
  • Have a penlight (pocket light) – check to make sure it works
  • Have a pocket visual acuity card
  • Have a stethoscope
  • Have a reflex hammer
  • Keep in mind your “Learning Objectives for Ophthalmology Elective”

If you want to observe cataract surgery or other ophthalmic procedures, you must take a short course in Orientation to the CCR OR. The course is given every Wednesday morning at 9:30 in the Surgery Administration Conference Room – Room 3350 – in the new Hospital Building.

Take the Ophthalmology test before you finish the elective.  Call Dr. D to schedule your test.

Have the resident or residents that you have spent the most time with fill out your evaluation form and bring the form to the Clinic Chief or Dr. D.

Have a great learning experience.  For any significant positive or negative feedback, e-mail Dr. Axelrod at faxelro@yahoo.com
