Tissue Factor (Factor III)

Tissue factor (factor III) is a member of the cytokine receptor superfamily.

Rabbit Tissue Factor, Extracellular Domain (PDB file 1A21). Here it has crystallized as a dimer.

  • Red = Monomer A
  • Blue = Monomer B

The two molecules in the unit cell of the crystal are not identical. Superposition of the first 100 residues reveals a possible hinge-type motion.
Questions:

  • If tissue factor is, in fact, a cytokine receptor, what might be its role?
  • What is the ligand which binds to this purported receptor?
