Nucleosome

This page uses the Jmol java applet. Be sure your browser is java-enabled. Be patient--this one is about 12,000 atoms, so it may take a while for the structure to load! After it loads, you can drag the structure to rotate it or shift-drag to zoom. If you have a 2-button or 3-button mouse, the right-button may give you more display options.

This is the structure of a nucleosome (Protein Data Bank structure 1P3I), determined by X-ray crystallography. A DNA double helix is wrapped twice around a cluster of 8 histone proteins.

Color scheme:

  • Green + yellow = DNA
  • Proteins shown as red spacefilling atoms, except...
  • Positively charged amino acids (lysine + arginine) shown in blue.
