Cell and molecular biology of Leishmania photosensitization: Photosensitizers are either exogenously applied and/or endogenously produced by genetic complementation of Leishmania deficiencies in heme biosynthesis pathway. The transgenic Leishmania are under evaluation for their potential use as indicible suicidal mutants for vaccine/drug delivery into dendritic cells and macrophages for therapy and prophylaxis of diseases.

My research interest in KP Chang's laboratory is focused on the strategies of Leishmania parasites to promote their survival in the macrophage host cells. Nucleoside diphosphate kinase is released to scavenge extracellular ATP, thereby avoiding P2Z-mediated apoptosis.
