Program Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited institution of higher education prior to matriculation into the Program.

 

  • Graduate Education Record (GRE) examination taken within 5 years of the time of application. 
    • The General Examination is sufficient to meet this requirement.   
    • This requirement is not waived under any circumstance and no other standardized assessment examination may be substituted for this requirement.
    • There is no minimum score for the GRE requirement.  Successful candidates typically have total scores above 1000 and Analytical writing scores above 4.0.
    • You must enter code 7675 for "Rosalind Franklin U Phys Therapy." Contact ETS for more information regarding the GRE examination.

 

Applicants to the 2011-2012 Cycle are strongly encouraged to take the GRE prior to July 31, 2011. Changes in the GRE will significantly delay processing of test scores taken after August 1, 2011. Early Decision candidates in PTCAS must take the GRE and request scores to be sent by no later than July 31, 2011.

  • Prerequisite course work completed in an accredited institution of higher education prior to matriculation into the Program.   
    • All prerequisite course grades must be “C” or higher and must have been taken within the last ten years, but recommended within the last five years. Courses with a grade below a “C” will not fulfill the prerequisite requirements, but will be included in the applicant’s grade point average.
    • There is no minimum GPA requirement. Successful candidates typically have Cumulative GPAs above 3.5 and Science GPAs above 3.3

    • Required courses include: 
      • English Composition – 3 semester hours
      • Humanities/Social Sciences– 9 semester hours, including one course of Psychology
      • Chemistry (with lab)– 8 semester hours
      • Biology (with lab)– 8 semester hours
      • Physics (with lab)– 8 semester hours, courses must be sequential
      • Anatomy/Physiology (with lab)- 4 semester hours, human anatomy/physiology recommended
      • Statistics- 3 semester hours, including descriptive and inferential statistics
    • Applicants must have completed at least 2/3rds of the required prerequisite coursework prior to applying to the DPT Program.  If a candidate is selected for admission into the program with outstanding prerequisite courses, the offer is of provisional acceptance and the student must provide proof of successful completion of any remaining prerequisite coursework with a grade of “C” or higher prior to matriculation into the DPT program.

     

    • Transfer credits from professional programs are not accepted and applicants are not granted advance standing for any professional course work completed regardless of previous academic experience or professional status.

 

  • Physical Therapy Observational Experience: Applicants must have a strong understanding of the profession.  To this end, applicants must have worked or volunteered for a minimum of 40 hours in a physical therapy practice. 
  • Applicants must submit 3 letters of recommendation through PTCAS as follows:
    • One from a licensed physical therapist
    • One from a science, math, or liberal arts professor with rank of Assistant Professor or higher under which the applicant has studied
    • One of the applicant’s choice who has supervised work experience or is otherwise uniquely qualified to comment on potential for professional study

  • Proof of verbal and written English proficiency is required if English is not the applicant’s native language. Official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam should be sent directly to the PTCAS admissions service from Educational Testing Service (ETS) at www.ets.org/toefl  This requirement is waived if the applicant has attended a minimum of two consecutive years of college study or higher in the United States or if applicant is a permanent US resident.

 

  • FOREIGN APPLICANTS ONLY: An official course evaluation for equivalence report if applicant attended a foreign educational program is required.  The evaluation should be sent directly to the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service(PTCAS) admissions service (see Foreign Transcript Evaluation for more information).

 

  • Other Program Skills and Requirements:
    • Proficiency in basic computer skills– word-processing, Internet searches, e-mail – is expected of all entering students
    • All applicants must meet the minimum technical standards for the DPT Program(see Technical Standards).
    • Critical Thinking Examination taken during the on-campus interview
