Overview of Internal Faculty Grant Funding Program

The office of the Vice President for Research has established the following schedule of funding for internal faculty grants for each academic year. The goal of this program is to enhance current and future research programs at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. This program includes the following categories: 1) Bridging and 2) PO1 application support.  Review will be performed by either 1) external peer review mechanisms and/or 2) an internal review panel made up of NIH funded investigators at RFUMS. The panel will rank all proposals and make recommendations to the V.P. for Research.
1. Bridging. (see accompanying Bridging program file that describes what information is needed for the application):

  • Purpose: To provide interim support to those who have submitted grants to national organizations but were not funded. The main objective of this program is support faculty submitting competitive renewals to the NIH. Other national agencies may be considered if their direct costs are in the range of $100,000 per year. This support should assist in providing the data needed to improve a previous proposal and enhance the success of the application which will be resubmitted to the external agency. Awarded funds cannot be used for faculty salary support, but can be used to support technical or postdoctoral personnel. It is expected that a revised submission will occur within 1 or 2 grant cycles from the time the critique sheets were received.

  • For: Full-time faculty members from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

  • Evaluated on: The VP of Research will determine if the request meets the minimum requirements for review. Information needed for consideration include: priority score, percentile ranking, scale used by the funding agency, proposal describing how the original application will be improved based on the critique sheets from the funding agency. The critique sheets (received within previous 12 month period) along with the investigator’s comments on how each criticism will be addressed will also be included with the application. It is anticipated that this bridging support may supplement existing funds that the investigator may have carried-over from the previous year. If that is the case, the investigator should state that in the budget of the application. With the acceptance of bridging funds, the investigator commits to re-submitting the proposal to the NIH (or equivalent funding agency) within 2 grant cycles for the time the critique sheets were received.

  • Maximum: $50,000 for 1 year. If the applicant is supporting a graduate student, the Dean of the Graduate School will seek to identify funds to support that student through additional sources.

  • RFPs sent out:
    • Winter: January
    • Spring: April
    • Fall: September

2. Start PO1 or Research Center.

  • Purpose: To develop a grant proposal to a major federal source to establish a PO1 or Research Center.
  • For: Collaborating faculty groups.
  • Evaluated on: Total team strength.
  • Maximum: $25,000 for one year.
  • RFP sent out: Call the V.P. for Research at x8538 for details and to request forms.
  • Proposals due: Requests can be made anytime during the year.
