Podiatric Surgery and Applied Biomechanics

 

Mission Statement

To provide our students with a working knowledge and understanding of surgical, orthopedic and biomechanic conditions of the lower extremity.

Goals

  • The Department of Podiatric Surgery and Applied Biomechanics will be recognized as the national leader for preparing students in podiatric surgery, applied biomechanics and orthopedic diseases education.
     
  • To provide the student with the concepts of preventative and conservative care, as well as surgical intervention when appropriate.
     
  • To master the knowledge essential for the practice of foot and ankle surgery, including sterile technique, instrumentation, pre and post operative care, anesthesia, hospital protocol, surgical technique, including specific knowledge of the procedures utilized in foot and ankle surgery, general surgical care of the patient, and the medico-legal aspects of surgery.
     
  • To provide instruction in the provision of basic and comprehensive foot and ankle services.
     
  • To encourage research within the Department of Surgery, including the publication of literature related to foot and ankle surgery.
     
  • To provide faculty for the purpose of continuing medical education programs to educate those who treat the lower extremities by surgical means.

Objectives

  • Define student learning outcomes and programmatic outcomes for the Department which are consistent with the College's core competencies and current standards of practice.
  • Enhance departmental research productivity.
  • Provide community service.
  • Recruit quality faculty.
  • Develop a grand rounds session having students present interesting cases seen in the clinical setting.
  • Initiate the process for development of a year long biomechanics and orthopedic diseases fellowship.
