General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel is committed to providing the best possible legal counsel to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. It manages an extensive variety of services to the University, including:

• Providing legal advice on a wide range of legal matters
• Providing training and serving as a resource to University personnel and students on relevant legal issues
• Assisting officers of the University and senior management in carrying out the mission of the University
• Representing the University in court and administrative proceedings, and selecting and supervising outside counsel in litigation and other legal matters
• Developing and reviewing contracts, leases, policies, procedures, and other legal documents
• Educating administrators on ever-changing legal requirements, precedents, and developments in laws that may affect the University
• Advising the board of trustees on corporate governance matters

Patricia Bergeson began her position as General Counsel in November 2003. Prior to coming to the University, she was a partner at a prominent Chicago firm, headed up the largest division of the City of Chicago Law Department, and was Associate General Counsel at the University of Chicago. Her experience includes substantial jury trial practice, collective bargaining negotiations, and teaching in the employment, tort, and medical liability areas. She received a B.A. with high honor from Michigan State University and a J.D. cum laude from Notre Dame Law School.
