The Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine recognized the lifelong commitment to postgraduate medical education of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM ’56, APMA past president and current chair of its Bylaws and Procedures Committee, at the 2008 COTH Faculty Development Conference, held at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, OH.
1970s
Samuel Merritt College selected John Venson, DPM ’76, as dean of the California School of Podiatric Medicine in June 2008. In his role as dean, Dr. Venson will serve as the chief administrative and academic officer for CSPM, and will provide leadership and coordination for all aspects of curricular programming of the School. Since graduating from Scholl College, Venson has served in a variety of leadership roles in podiatric medical education, accreditation, credentialing and management. He currently serves as the Associate Director, Credentials at the American Board of Podiatric Surgery located in San Francisco. His former professional experience includes Associate Professorship and Chair, Department of Medicine and Surgery, Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Chief Operations Officer at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute as well as Vice President, Compliance and Operations at Thomas White International. Dr. Venson served as President, American Board of Podiatric Surgery in 1990.
1980s
Ronald Lee, DPM ’83 joined the staff of Fort Madison Community Hospital Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center in Fort Madison, Iowa.
The Waterloo-Cedar Fall Courier interviewed Phillip J. Morreale, DPM ’84 on the importance of preventative care to keep feet healthy. Dr. Morreale specializes in diabetic foot care. “The foot is so important to a person’s health. The feet often provide early warning signs of medical problems. In addition to diabetes, there’s heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and poor circulation. Periodic examination can often lead to early detection and effective treatment.”
Barry Rosenblum, DPM ’87 and Kevin Riemer, DPM ’06 co-authored an article entitled “Surgical Off-loading of the Diabetic Forefoot: Is This Concept Under-utilized?” that appeared recently in Podiatry Management.
Joseph Borreggine, DPM ’88 was named president-elect of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association. Dr. Borreggine previously served as the association’s vice president, treasurer and secretary. He is slated to be association president in 2009-10. He has been in practice for 20 years and owns The Family Foot Care Center in Charleston and Effingham, Illinois. He is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
1990s
Oak Park’s Wednesday Journal featured Mary M. DiSomma DPM ’91 and Ruth A. Songco-Chi, DPM ’03 in its “Women in Business” section. Dr. DiSomma owns DiSomma Foot and Ankle Clinic in Oak Park, Illinois. The Forest Park Review also featured the services offered by Drs. DiSomma and Chi.
Bruce E. Williams, DPM ’91, a sports medicine podiatrist in private practice in Merrillville, Indiana was elected President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) in July 2008. In addition to being a Fellow and President of the AAPSM, Dr. Williams is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and the American Board of Podiatric Surgeons (ABPS). Also elected was Matthew Werd, DPM ’93 of Lakeland, Florida who serves as Immediate Past President.
McLean County Orthopedics welcomed Brian L. Hamm, DPM ’94 to its Bloomington, Illinois practice. Dr. Hamm is a Fellow, American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons; Board Certified in Foot and Reconstruction Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery, Member, American Podiatric Medical Association; Clinical Faculty Adjunct Associate Professor of Podiatric Medicine, Des Moines University.
Carlos F. Smith, DPM ’94 was elected president of the National Podiatric Medical Association (NPMA) in June 2008. Dr. Smith is CEO/Medical Director of Centers for Foot and Ankle Care in Chicago, Illinois. He has served on the Board of Directors of the NPMA since 2000 and served as Vice-President and Scientific Conference Chair of the association.
Jayson G. Cortez, DPM ’99 was recently named a board certified podiatrist. Cortez, originally from Laughton, Okla., has been practicing in Leesville since 2001. He received his board certification in August for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and American Board of Lower Extremity Surgery. “In the state there are approximately 671 actively licensed podiatrists and out of this number only 18 are board certified,” said Cortez. He completed his residency at Wyckoff Medical Center in New York which is associated with Cornell University.
2000s
Daniel Smith, DPM ’00 joined Westside Podiatry Center in Baldwinsville, New York.
Brandon James Hawkins, DPM ’01 joined Stockdale Podiatry Group in Bakersfield, California. Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English, Hawkins serves as team podiatrist for the Bakersfield Blitz, Bakersfield Jam, Bakersfield College, Taft College, College of the Sequoias, Fresno Pacific University and Bakersfield Christian High School.
Brigette Smith, DPM ’01 joined the medical staff at Mariners Hospital in Key West, Florida. She completed her residency training at Larkin Community Hospital and South Miami Hospital.
Todd Derksen, DPM ’05 answered questions posed by The Post-Crescent regarding his recent medical mission with Physicians for Peace in Africa, Ilizarov technique, reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and foot trauma. Dr. Derksen provides podiatric care at Orthopedic & Sports Institute of Fox Valley in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Raymond A. Giles, DPM ’06 has joined the Podiatry Associates of New Mexico, Ltd. in Albuquerque, NM. He completed his surgical residency at Midwestern Regional Medical Center.
