Biography

 

Dr. John C. Preston was most recently the Senior Director of Education and Professional Development for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).  He holds a bachelor’s, a master’s, and a doctorate in nursing.  He has been a registered nurse for 29-years and a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist since 1994. 

In his most recent position with AANA, he had direct responsibility for the association’s work in the areas of entry-level nurse anesthesia education, continuing education standards setting and validation, online continuing education, and educational programming and content delivery for the more than 45,000 CRNAs in the United States.  In addition, he designed the only post-graduate advanced practice fellowship in advanced pain management for nurse anesthetists and worked to secure an academic relationship with Hamline University in St. Paul, MN to collaboratively offer this innovative educational program. 

Prior to assuming his duties at the AANA, Dr. Preston was an Associate Professor, Program Director and coordinator of the graduate nurse anesthesia program at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. He was the founding director, opening this program for the Knoxville campus in 2001 and served as the Nurse Anesthesia Program Director for the Memphis Campus from 1997 – 2001.  He has been active in specialized accreditation having served six years as an educator representative and board member to the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program.  He was elected to two terms as the agency’s Vice Chairman from 2005-2007 and was elected Chairman of their Board of Directors serving in this role from 2007-2008.  He left this position to assume his role as a staff member at the AANA.

Dr. Preston has also been involved in nursing regulation, having been appointed in 2005 by the Governor to serve as the first APRN designated member of the Tennessee Board of Nursing.  He served on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Committee from 2006 – 2008, during which time the final version of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education was drafted and released on July 7, 2008.
