Description:JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of a pathologist, the Pathology Assistant prepares specimens for examination, performs gross dissection, dictation, photographs specimens and may perform postmortem examinations, including gross dissection, dictations and microscopic examinations. In addition, instructs and trains fellows and students; and, works as a team with the staff in the grossing room (pathologist assistants, fellows and students) and maintains the grossing room. As needed, performs the duties of the pathologist assistant. All work performed requires an extremely high degree of analytical ability in order to observe, identify, and report pathology data. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Two (2) or more years of experience in a surgical pathology laboratory in a tertiary care facility or large community hospital is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES A comprehensive knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practices applicable to highly specialized functions of the laboratory or general area assigned. And, the ability to apply this knowledge in carrying out pathology procedures and techniques. Ability to demonstrate and exercise leadership and personnel skills demonstrated by assisting and providing training and evaluation performance of students and fellows. A high degree of skill and judgment in managing records and data through the use of laboratory systems, PCS or other devices. This position requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, pushing, prolonged standing, operating laboratory equipment and other devices. The working area may expose the Pathology Extender to infections and odorous chemicals when performing autopsies or working with surgical specimens. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions. MUST MEET ALL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION FILING Degrees and transcripts from non-U.S.. accredited institutions must be translated and certified to the U.S. equivalent academic credentials by a recognized U.S. education interpreter service.
