Description: Position Summary: Provides highly specialized services designated for the WCMC Institutional Biobank, including: gross pathology, dissection of human surgical specimens, obtaining clinical history, and preparation of bio specimens provided for research purposes. Serves as the primary lead on specimen collection and assesses bio specimen utilization in a timely and efficient manner. Position Activities: Responsible for the identification, collection and processing of anatomical pathology bio specimens to be provided for research purposes. Determines which bio specimen, or portion thereof, is necessary for complete evaluation and which is excess (remnant tissue) that may be provided to the bio specimen resource for research purposes. Works closely with pathologist in this process to ensure that patient care is not compromised. Assesses bio specimen utilization in a timely and efficient manner. Technical responsibilities include gross examination, dissection of anatomic pathology specimens, preparation of tissue for a variety of pathologic testing including molecular studies and freezing, and performs gross photography, at times. Works closely with pathologist to determine key specimen handling practices that affect downstream analysis of the specimen. Ensures the optimization of the handling of bio specimens to minimize resulting molecular changes that may result from the processing activities. This includes not only the temperature and timing of bio specimen processing but also such considerations as the size and volume of the bio specimen that will be stored for future use. Communicate with biobank personnel when tissue is available for biobanking. Works with manager in developing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and participates in the Quality Management program.  Maintains competencies and training in human subject's protections and privacy regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training, biosafety/biohazard training, or bloodborne pathogen training. Maintains compliance with policies and procedures in: risk mitigation, disaster response, and emergency preparedness. Maintains required CME. Performs other related duties as assigned.
