Karen O’Mara, DO

Associate Professor of Medicine; Acute Care & Telemedicine Education Director

Dr. Karen O'Mara received her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Lutheran General Hospital, and her Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Chicago Medical School.

She is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and in Internal Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Critical Care Medicine. She has over 15 years' teaching experience instructing Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine residents. She began at the Chicago Medical School instructing medicine clerkship students as a site director in 2014.

Dr. O'Mara has been a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, and Chicago Medical Society since 1986. She holds Fellow status with the American College of Chest Physicians and has held numerous committee and task force appointments with the Illinois State Medical Society. Dr. O'Mara is a member of the Illinois State Medical Disciplinary Board, a Fellow of the Federation of State Medical Boards and a Fellow of the American Association of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

Her academic interests include critical care and acute care/emergency medicine, telemedicine, patient safety, and professionalism.
