Karen O’Mara, DO

Associate Professor of Medicine; Acute Care & Telemedicine Education Director

Dr. Karen O'Mara received her doctorate (DO) in osteopathic medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and holds a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Lutheran General Hospital, and her Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Chicago Medical School. She is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Critical Care Medicine.  

Dr. O’Mara has extensive teaching experience instructing Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine students and residents and over 25 years of clinical medicine practice and director experience in emergency and multidisciplinary critical care medicine, including tele-ICU. She assumed her present position as Education Director at the Chicago Medical School in 2016.

Dr. O'Mara is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Chicago Medical Society, Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, National Association of EMS Educators and International Association of Medical Science Educators   She is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Federation of State Medical Boards and American Association of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, the latter two linked to her position as a Board member on the Illinois State Medical Disciplinary Board.

Her academic and research interests include critical care and acute care/emergency medicine, telemedicine, patient safety, and advancing the use of m-Health apps and digital technology in patient education and safety.
