Virtual Commencement Ceremony 2020

Do I need to register to participate in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony May 29, 2020?

No. You will not need to register to participate in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony on May 29, 2020. All students who are graduating as of May 29, 2020 will be included in the ceremony unless they opt out of having their name and photo (where available) included. In addition, any students completing their last course during summer 2020 will have the opportunity to participate as well with permission of their department. 

I cannot attend the Virtual Ceremony on May 29, 2020 at 10:00am, will it be available on the web after this time/date?

Yes – the Virtual Commencement Ceremony will be accessible online after the ceremony is complete in about 24 hours. Please watch for additional information the week after the ceremony for links to the archived ceremony. A link to an electronic copy of the program will also be available and a printed copy will be mailed to all graduates with their diploma.

I do not want to have my name included in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony, how do I opt out?

If you do not wish to have your name included in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony, please utilize this form to opt out. Your form must be received by May 15, 2020 in order to opt out of the ceremony.

How will I receive my diploma?

All diplomas will be mailed as part of the graduation package to the permanent address on file for each student. To check the address on file, please visit Self Service no later than May 15, 2020 and update your address for where you would like your diploma mailed during June 2020.

What will be included in my mailed Graduation Package?

For 2020 graduates, RFU will be mailing each graduate a graduation package which will include their diploma in a RFU branded diploma cover, (if degree requirements are complete), a printed copy of the Commencement program, and any awards the graduate received. In addition, the university will include a university branded pen within the package as a keepsake for all graduates. For any graduates who also received awards, their award certificate and any correlating items to their award will also be included in the package.

Do I need regalia to participate in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony?

No, graduates are not required to purchase regalia to participate in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony.

I already purchased regalia for the Commencement Ceremony, can I return it?

Herff Jones does not allow regalia to be returned, however the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusion has contacted all graduates who purchased regalia through Herff Jones before April 1, 2020 and reimbursement to each student is be coordinated and should be received within 4-6 weeks. If you purchased or borrowed regalia from a prior year graduate, this was not coordinated by the university and cannot be reimbursed.

I requested a mentor to Present me as a Candidate for Degree. Do they still participate in the virtual Commencement Ceremony?

Any graduate who requested a mentor to present them as a Candidate for Degree will be listed in the graduation program each graduate receives during June 2020. Since the 2020 ceremony will be virtual, those presenting graduates will not need regalia to participate.

How do I register for the 2021 Commencement Ceremony next year if I wish to participate?

Each 2020 graduate will be given the opportunity to participate in the 2021 Commencement Ceremony if they wish to walk in the ceremony. 2020 graduates will be contacted via email in January 2021 to be given the opportunity to participate. Please watch your RFU and alternate email for additional information. Information will also be posted on the university’s Commencement website in January 2021.

Will a photo of me appear in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony?

For all graduates who have a composite photo on file and do not opt out of their name being included in the Virtual Commencement Ceremony, a photo will be shown of you at the time your name is announced. For any graduates who do not have a photo on file, you will be contacted with instructions to provide a photo no later than May 10, 2020 for use in the ceremony if you wish. 

I am receiving an award that was to be given out at the Awards Ceremony on May 28, 2020. Will there be a Virtual Awards Ceremony?

During the 2020 Virtual Commencement Ceremony, graduates who are receiving awards will also be acknowledged and the graduation program will include a list of awards and awardees. The paper award and any monetary award that correlates will be mailed to each graduate as part of their graduation package.
