CME Announcements and Disclosures

April 20, 2021 - Noon | Janet Shibley Hyde, PhD - UW Madison | "The Future of Gender and Sex in Science: Five Challenges to the Gender Binary"

Target Audiences

Clinicians, Residents, Administrators, Students, Basic Science Faculty, Researchers and Allied Health Care Professionals.

Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Examine the scientific evidence challenging the gender binary (the assumption that all humans fit into one of two categories, female or male)
  2. Identify the challenges to the gender binary and their implications for research methods
  3. Relate the challenges to the gender binary and their implications for patient care

Practice Gap

Many clinicians still regard sex and gender as strictly binary. This leads to diagnostic bias and inappropriate care in many situations. Although most people can check a box for "male" or "female" on a clinical intake form, these categories crudely categorize individual differences in physical and mental health. Since most clinicians were educated in this binary format, an updated understanding of the science of sex and gender will lead to more accurate diagnosis and treatment and more sensitive clinical care.
