Critical components of a successful postdoctoral experience include mentorship and career development. Importantly, these components are most effective in an integrated approach that considers the postdoctoral fellow’s prior experience, current circumstances, and future goals. To ensure that postdoctoral fellow training at RFUMS is optimal, the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has implemented a new program to meet the professional needs of our postdoctoral fellows. This program, called Career Enhancement and Development for Postdoctoral Fellows (CED.PDF), is administered through the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, but it is also be guided by a Steering Committee of the University's postdoctoral fellows.
The Program includes seminars, workshops, and other activities designed to improve not only the current status of postdoctoral fellows, but also their future career options. In addition, the Program provides a means for postdoctoral fellows to self-assess their current professional status and to formulate future career goals. This self-assessment establishes a foundation for discussion with their mentor or immediate supervisor. Self-assessment and goal-setting can also be measured against core competencies for postdoctoral training, as delineated in the program.
