Key Organizations

  • CAST: recognized for being the national leader of UDL. Developed the UDL guidelines based on research into how humans learn. They offer professional development resources for postsecondary instructors.
  • UDL On Campus: offers resources for faculty, instructional designers, and administrators on how to apply UDL principles in areas like course design, assessment, and technology selection
  • DO-IT Program: The DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) program at the University of Washington uses UDL as a framework for its work. The program aims to make technology, instruction, and physical spaces accessible and usable for individuals with disabilities, aligning with UDL's emphasis on flexibility and inclusivity. 

Key People

  • Dr. David Rose and Dr. Anne Meyer: In the 1990s, Anne Meyer, David Rose, and their colleagues at CAST introduced universal design for learning (UDL), a framework to improve teaching and learning
  • Thomas J. Tobin: Faculty associate on the Learning Design, Development & Innovation (LDDI) team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and co-author of "Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education"
  • Kirsten T. Behling: Co-founder of the disability services in higher education graduate certificate program at Suffolk University, and director of student accessibility services at Tufts University, and co-author of "Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education". 
  • Katie Novak: An education consultant and author specializing in UDL, with a focus on inclusive practices and multi-tiered systems of support. 
  • Kevin Merry: An internationally recognized expert in UDL, with experience in various educational contexts and a focus on supporting curriculum and instructional design. 
  • Ann E Heelan: A consultant, writer, and speaker on UDL, with a focus on inclusive education practices.
