Practice Gap

Climate change is a significant threat to global health due to the negative effects of heat exposure, poor air and water quality, food security, increases in vector-borne diseases, and extreme weather episodes. Women, pregnant women, children, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to climate change due to socioeconomic, cultural, and physiologic factors, thus threatening to widen gender-based health disparities. The research and medical communities need to view climate change as a threat to patient health treating it as a public health issue, social justice issue, human rights issue, political issue, and a gender issue. This presentation will cover the effects of climate change on women's health and reframe the role of healthcare providers and researchers in addressing both climate change and its disparities.

General Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Explain how the changed climate impacts women’s health.
  2. Discuss strategies that can help mitigate adverse health impacts from the changed climate and help people adapt to the changed climate.
  3. Advocate for improved policies that can benefit the health of our communities.
