Experiential Education 

Experiential Education will benefit our students by providing exposure to the many career paths open to our graduates. Students will be linked with area Preceptors who will convey the excitement and complexities of their profession in real world settings. Students of advanced standing will be able to choose two electives specific to their area of interest. Our PharmD curriculum includes the following Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences:

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs)
Students are required to complete 300 hours of IPPEs during their first three years; at least 151 hours will be in health systems or community pharmacies.
P1 Required IPPEs:
  • Community pharmacy (independent and chain) – including patient counseling, OTC product recommendation, drug delivery and compounding  
  • Skilled pharmacy (compounding, admixture, TPN, etc) – including patient and family counseling

​P1 Schedule (2015-2016)

P2 Required IPPEs:

  • Hospital (dispensing) - including inpatient and outpatient/ambulatory 
  • Hospital (clinical) -  including surgical, medical, pediatric, geriatric, OB-GYN, coordination of care in health care teams 
  • Ambulatory care – including outpatient clinic specialties (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, pain, endocrinology)
  • Monitoring drug therapy
  • Educating patients on medication and medical device use  
Other Experiences 
  • Immunizations
  • CPR training
  • Service Learning
  • Practice management activities (insurance claims, prescription transfer, medical records)

P2 Schedule (2015-2016)

P3 Elective IPPEs: 

The P3 IPPE electives will take place during the third professional year of the curriculum. The elective will satisfy 40 hours of the 300 hours allocated to IPPEs. Students will complete these hours over the course of one week.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs)

The APPEs take place throughout the fourth year.  Each experience is six weeks in length.  The students have six APPEs for a total of 1,440 hours in the following areas:
