Blackbaud Security Notice

One of our fundraising technology partners, Blackbaud, recently notified us that it was the victim of a data security incident. Blackbaud is an engagement and fundraising software service provider that assists Rosalind Franklin University and thousands of other educational institutions and nonprofits all over the world. The university takes the protection and proper use of all of your information very seriously.

What Happened

We were informed that during the attack, a cybercriminal obtained copies of backup files from universities, foundations, and nonprofits across the United States, Canada, and the UK, including Rosalind Franklin University. These files may have contained your personal information. According to Blackbaud, they took steps to ensure that the backup file was destroyed and not made available or further disseminated beyond the original attack. More information about the incident can be found on their website: blackbaud.com/securityincident.

What Information Was Involved

We have determined that the compromised file may have contained only some demographic data such as a home address, telephone number, birthdate and degree information/graduation year that are used for alumni engagement activities. Blackbaud assures us that there is no reason to believe that any data was or will be misused or made available publicly, and that the cybercriminal did not access any highly sensitive financial information. RFU does not store credit cards, debit cards, or any banking information in our systems; therefore, that information would not be in the Blackbaud environment.

What We Are Doing

We are sharing information about this incident and the steps that we, and Blackbaud, are taking in response. Blackbaud has informed us that they identified and fixed the vulnerability associated with this incident, implemented several changes that will better protect your data from any subsequent incidents, and are undertaking additional efforts to harden their environment through enhancements to access management, network segmentation, and deployment of additional endpoint and network-based platforms. We are pleased with the measures Blackbaud is taking, but will be evaluating our future relationship with them. RFU maintains appropriate security standards and employs protocols to protect your personal information, and we require the same of our vendors

Our Commitment

Rosalind Franklin University collects, stores and manages personal information relating to students, staff, alumni, current and potential supporters and friends of the university. We take the protection and appropriate use of this information seriously and promise it will never be sold to a third party. It will only be used by us in accordance with the purposes of our university's mission:

  • Communicating with students, staff, alumni, and current and potential supporters;
  • Providing benefits and services to students, staff, alumni and supporters;
  • Furthering the University’s educational mission (through fundraising and volunteer support);
  • Enabling the University to achieve its strategic and operational goals;
  • Enabling the alumni and supporters to further enhance the current student experience and RFU's impact in the local community.
