The impacts of undernutrition in maternal child health. USAID reports that “undernutrition is estimated to be an underlying cause of 45 percent of child mortality and anemia contributing to 20 percent of maternal mortality therefore investing in nutrition is fundamental to survival goals”

General Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Incorporate pointed questions to understand the woman’s nutritional history / background when taking their medical history.
  2. Conduct appropriate follow-on studies and labs to assess the woman’s status.
  3. Develop an appropriate treatment regimen that includes early nutritional intervention.
  4. Develop a keen eye and heightened suspicion of a child’s learning disabilities and intellectual delays related to their pre- and post-natal nutritional deprivation.
  5. Consider undernutrition as a source of maternal child morbidity and mortality.
