Alexandra Michel, PhD, CNM, FACNM

Dr. Michel, an Army veteran, obtained her BSN and MSN from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, and her PhD from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC), Aurora, CO. She has completed Nursing Education (University of Colorado AMC) and Post-Doctoral Research (University of Hawaii at Manoa) Fellowships and is a Jonas Veterans Scholar. She is a licensed Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). As a registered nurse she worked in Detroit providing care to families at high risk for poor maternal and neonatal outcomes due to the effects of the Social Determinants of Health on her population. Once a CNM, she worked first in a Title X funded Family Planning Clinic in Genesee County, MI, followed by full-scope midwifery care across the country providing care at military treatment facilities in Washington State, North Carolina, and Hawaii. Her research has focused on improving population health with a focus on the improvement of prenatal care and our understanding about screening and vaccination guidelines uptake by providers and patients alike. In this role she published in a multitude of peer-reviewed journals and presented at local, regional, and national conferences. In her current role, she employs diverse didactic strategies to support active learning. As part of her approach, she includes simulation, empathy simulation, and gamification to introduce new materials and reinforce previously learned concepts.
