Biography

Araceli Esquivel (Celi Esquivel) is the Senior Manager, Enterprise Health Care Management at Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the nation’s fourth largest health insurer with over 13 million members.  The company includes the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as several subsidiaries.  She is an experienced leader in health care management and strategic planning in the insurance industry. Her primary responsibilities include integration of innovative approaches and trend analyses to help improve the quality of care for vulnerable populations. Since 2010, she serves on the Health Care Disparities executive committee to lead corporate programs that include enhancing cultural competencies, improving health literacy in disparate populations and establishing strategic partnerships with healthcare providers serving these under-served groups of people. 

Previous responsibilities included the financial administration of a multi-million dollar vendor portfolio delivering services to members and providers for disease management, health information and technology, wellness programs, and medical management.  For 2010-2012, she was selected to serve on the HCSC Diversity & Inclusion Council, responsible for fully integrating diversity and inclusion into the company business strategies.  Since starting at HCSC in 1993, she has held various roles that encompassed the areas of Marketing, Finance and Claims Customer Service.  Her management roles began early in her career and include both analytical and technical teams, along with various external vendors and consulting partners.   

In 2012, she joined Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science as a lecturer on health care management encompassing courses on Global Health and Culture in Health Care.  Also, in 2012, Ms. Esquivel became a lecturer at DePaul University developing "The Business of U.S. Health Care in A Changing Environment" course at the School of New Learning.  Since 2003, she is an Adjunct Professor at Robert Morris University Illinois (RMU) teaching various MBA and undergraduate courses on Leadership, Health Care Management, Organizational Behavior, as well as Diversity and Human Resource Management.  She was selected to and completed the RMU’s 2008-2009 Adjunct Fellows Program.   

She earned a B.S. degree from Elmhurst College with a double major in Economics and Business Administration.  While attending Elmhurst College, Ms. Esquivel was recognized by the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund for her academic and campus achievements.  She also earned an MBA in Human Resources from DePaul University. 

Ms. Esquivel is committed to promoting interprofessional collaborations to addressing health care disparities that deliver an outcomes-based approach  across the health care system.  She participated and currently serves in a number of civic and professional organizations.  They include the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), the Metropolitan Leadership Institute, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois, the Heartland Alliance Board of Directors, the Renaissance Social Services Inc. Board of Directors, the America’s Health Insurance Plan’s (AHIP) National Health Plan Collaborative and its Health Literacy Task Force, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s Healthcare Disparities Workgroup, the C-Change Health Disparities Advisory Committee, and the National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives.
